Personal Branding Building Panel Notes

Event date: Jan 24, 2024

Panelists: Jackie Bow, Shruti Gupta, Ariel Shin, Swathi Joshi

● What is a personal brand?

○ Brand is what people think of you when you’re not in the room

○ Brand is how you want to be perceived

○ Brand represents your experiences, not just your work but what you have done and learned outside of work. It should reflect the direction you want to take.

○ Personal brand is what you take from job to job, what you talk about and write about. If you give presentations and write blogs about the work you have done it outlives the time you’ve spent at that company and will continue to enrich your brand .

● How did you get started?

○ I looked for a company that had leaders with a great brand and joined them, realizing that that company must have processes and support to help those leaders build their brands.

○ I started by attending conferences, initially more for validation of my own technical skills and experience but with time met more people and got connected. It was very valuable to learn from others – about their daily work, methodology. It helped to feel connected in a field that sometimes feels very lonely.

○ Hiring managers for entry level engineering jobs look for skills and not how many followers you have. So for those roles you should focus on the work and not so much on creating a persona.

○ Look at what’s happening in the industry, be plugged in, observe and learn from others who have had journeys you admire.

○ The end-to-end process for some activities can be complex and lengthy, such as writing a blog. At the beginning try to do it as part of a group. You can divide roles within the group, and brainstorm together how to create

the right message and socialize it for a broader audience. When you have done it once you have a template and it gets easier. The work in the group can also improve momentum and your own commitment to a timeline.

● What are tips for networking?

○ Networking can be intimidating at first, so rather than just trying to network try to find a good group to learn from, meet like minded people. After a few times trying to meet people you will have more confidence in such conversations.

○ Make sure to network with people from within your company across internal organizations as cybersecurity is a very cross functional challenge.

○ The cybersecurity field is a small one and companies have similar challenges and utilize similar methodologies - it helps to learn how others tackle those challenges

○ Networking can be scary especially, for introverts, however it’s just about being curious, learning from others, confirming industry problems, etc. ○ As you network, focus on what you can learn and the personal connection you can make. Relationships matter, not just growing your LinkedIn contacts.

● How would you stack-rank brand building activities?

○ Attend a conference - it gets you experience and exposure (although most conferences nowadays are recorded and you can get that content offline). ○ Write a CFP (Call for Proposal) which can also be converted to a conference presentation, a blog, or a podcast.

○ Blog - it’s going to be there and provide you benefits for a while. ○ Go on a podcast.
